Lagenaria (hard shell)
- Hardshell gourds have white blossoms, range wildly in size and shape, and dry with a light brown, tough, hard shell.
Cucurbita (ornamental)
- Ornamental gourds have yellow blossoms, are very closely related to squashes, are used fresh for colorful decoration, but can be dried leaving a tough, but thin shell. The colors are not preserved in drying.
Luffa
- Luffas, the vegetable sponge, have yellow blossoms, and are edible when immature; when dry they have a thin outer skin and a tough, fibrous interior. The skin strips off easiest when still green, before the interior is completely dry. If the luffa is discolored, it can be bleached in a 10% bleach solution (use hand and eye protection.)
